We are well into summer and this is a season when many people go on vacation for fun and relaxation. Last month, we talked about finding enjoyable activities to build and strengthen our marriages. Summer is a perfect time to begin this, if you haven’t already. Now let’s pick up where we left off…

I talked about the enjoyment that my husband and I received from hosting backyard cook-outs, gardening and working together both inside and outside the house. his type of leisure interest is important especially to my husband but honestly gardening is one of those things I could do without. It is probably due to the fact that I was raised tending to the family’s large garden each year. We filled freezers and cabinets full of fresh food and I had my “fill” of gardening at a young age.

My husband, Danny, understands this. He knows there are several things that I am interested in and together we have “equal opportunity” fun. What is this you may ask? Simply listening to your spouse and finding out what he or she enjoys, as opposed to having it all your own way.

Going to state parks is a favorite activity for me, year round. I love taking a drive up rural roadways to a state park for a day of walking, picnicking and relaxing. One of my favorites is a little over an hour’s drive from my home, to Davy Crockett State Park in Tennessee.

Picture rolling hills and pine needle covered trails which weave in and out of the scattered woods. There are occasional places where you can sit or observation places to take in the nature all around you. At any time of the year, you see squirrels, deer, chipmunks and rabbits and in the fall, wild turkeys abound. They sense they are safe within the park so if you are quiet, you can watch them for a long time. A bubbling, rolling stream runs through the park with fish and frogs around, the icy waters inviting one to wade during the hot summer.

We always carry a picnic lunch and even grill
The key is finding activities we both take pleasure in and working them into our busy schedules...
at times, just breathing in the woody smells while we laugh, talk and enjoy. Taking a couple of friends with us completes the package and we leave refreshed and ready to head back to home, for another week of work. This is an inexpensive get-away and one I never get tired of. There is also a campground there when we have longer to stay and nothing beats sitting around a fire, roasting marshmallows in the woods.

Another activity which we receive equal enjoyment is finding new restaurants to dine at. Our ears are always open to suggestions of friends and family for some little out of the way café which has the best food around, according to them. Many times we hunt new breakfast places when we leave early to visit local flea markets or arts and crafts shows.

The key is finding activities we both take pleasure in and working them into our busy schedules. It might sound like we just glide along from adventure to adventure but it really takes a lot of work and planning. It is worth it as we return from another one of our day trips, rejuvenated. I can’t wait until our granddaughter is old enough to join in on some of our jaunts to the park.

Speaking of adventure, next week is our anniversary and we are already planning a trip to one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate twenty-seven years…simply Marriage 101…
