Interview with Canada's Diamond Coach Adele Alfano
Canada's Diamond Coach and international motivational speaker Adele Alfano has been described as the "speaker with a spark". Celebrating ten years in the speaking industry, she has earned a reputation of a renowned expert in personal leadership and workplace change management.
Her entrepreneurial spirit has extended to the first ever self-published collaborative books called "Experts Speak Out" and the producer of the yearly sold out events called Kiss my Tiara. We had the pleasureof sharing a morning coffee inbetween her tight schedule and here is what she had to say:
Question: How did you come to be known as a motivational speaker and especially Canada's Diamond Coach?
As a person who was incredibly shy in high school, I am amazed of where life's trajectories takes you. I would never have believed that I would one day speak in front
of hundreds of people at once. I truly believe that things do not happen by chance and that events, books and especially people come into your life when you are ready to receive them.
The ball started rolling about 15 years ago when I became a fitness instructor, then the founding member and president of the Hamilton chapter of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers (CAPS) and then getting laid off from a full time job. Because of my love of diamonds (which woman does not love them!) and their great qualities, my mentor at the time branded me as Canada's Diamond Coach and it has since stuck. The rest
as they say, is history!
Question: You have been nominated for Canada's 100 Most Powerful Women. What are the secrets to your success?
I live by a quote from Helen Keller who said "that alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much". My success is a collaborative success of many people. I owe
my success by all the people that I have relationships, both personally and professionally. They include: my family, life-partner, friends, webpeople, business
partners, printers, graphic artists, assistants, accountant, meeting planners and mentors. Many people in business may call these relationships "business or strategic alliances", but they are my personal board of advisors. Every success that I have experienced is the direct result of the connection between all of us. Much like a diamond necklace. Each diamond shines as equally as the one beside it! But, together...watch out... we sparkle and shine!
Question: The publishing business is certainly different than the speaking industry. How did this part of your business start?
Well, they say that business success is about diversity. This part of my business started as a necessity. A professional speaker needs a product or book to showcase their expertise. Putting together a book by myself when I first started in the speaking industry seemed like a lofty dream. One day I had a lightbulb moment and thought...'why
not share a book with someone else'. I approached another motivational speaker, Kathy Glover Scott of Ottawa and we has since become publishing business partners. In a short
period of time, we have published 11 books, featured over 120 contributors, 70,000 global books in print, some that have been translated in 3 languages and have generated a
potential revenue of $750,000 for our contributors. One thing I learned from this experience is listen to your gut and natural instincts. It never steers you wrong!
Question: What words of widsom can you offer someone who is starting in business?
Well, I can talk for hours on this topic. I believe the foundation of any business is passion. If you do not absolutely love what you are doing...the forget it. Do your homework and do not be proud enough to ask for help. Read, research, absorb, ask questions, get a mentor. Knowledge in your own industry is power. And lastly, be flexible and realistic. All businesses, much like life, goes through it's own hills and valleys, ebbs and flows and failures and success. Be willing to be adaptable and open to new ways of doing things, thinking and learning. Owning your own business is an evolution and a
work in progress....much like us...don't you think?
